Area Lead - Business and Law

Salary: c. £50,000 pa

(Depending upon your skills and experience - Includes Main Teaching Scale Plus Management Allowance) 


We are looking EITHER for someone who has already demonstrated success (perhaps as a Head or Second in their Business, Law,  or similar Faculty; or as a Business or Law Subject Lead or Second), OR as a teacher with a proven track record of outstanding teaching practice in Business Studies or Law. to lead our Business and Law Area - a large, growing and very popular part of our OFSTED Grade 2 'Good' College.  

John Leggott College invests in its people. We would like the successful applicant to take up post in September 2021, but we understand that we may need to be flexible, to meet your notice requirements and expectations.  Because the post will arise from the retirement of the existing post-holder, we can even accommodate a Christmas 2021 start, if you prefer it.


About the Role

This is a vital appointment for our award-winning College. Reporting through the Assistant Principal, the role will be varied, demanding, and rewarding.

The role will be to lead the Business and Law Area (many Colleges would call this a ‘Faculty Head’), covering A level Business, A Level Law, BTEC Level 3 Business (single, double and extended), Level 2 Business, and BTEC Level 3 Law (single) – all highly popular subjects with our students (more than 650 students are studying subjects in the Area), and a significant part of our fantastic College. 

The Area is strong and successful, with great facilities (seven dedicated classrooms across Business and Law, excellent ICT integration, and a dedicated staff room for the Area) and a cohesive and supportive team of dedicated professionals (six staff teaching Business plus the Area Lead and three teaching Law).
BTEC Business  has had consistently outstanding value added over the last few years, with all courses returning ALPS 3 or 2 (top 25% or top 10%). Retention in BTEC Business averages above 90% and for most courses is at, or above sector rates.  Similarly,  BTEC Law  with three staff has value added averaging around 3 /4 (ALPS) over recent years, putting it on the border of top 25% for the sector. Again, retention is comparable with sector rates. 
The ALPS value added for A-Level Business has also been in the top 25% at grade 3 in 2018 and 2020, though it dipped a little to ALPS 5 in 2019. Retention in A-Level Business is strong at around 94% and around 3% points above the most recent sector rate.  The ALPS value added for A-Level Law has averaged around grade 4 over the last 3 years to put it in the territory of 'Good' - top 30 to 40%. Retention in A-Level Law is most recently at around 89% and 1.5% points above the most recent sector rate.. It it more than fair to say that in the Business and Law Area, results are strong.

Facilities are great, there are good resources available, and we work closely with Franklin and Wilberforce - two nearby Sixth Form Colleges - enabling the sharing of good practice on a wider basis than just within the Department, the Area,  and the College.  Even better, there is a friendly, professional, cohesive and supportive team environment across both the Area and the College.

The main challenge in the role will clearly be to maintain and continually improve the good results achieved in the Area.
Evolution, not revolution, is what is needed – constantly looking for small improvements, better methods, and new techniques wherever we can find them, leading an already-successful area into truly and consistently outstanding practice.
We are looking for someone who can work with pace and have a continual focus on student outcomes.

About John Leggott College

John Leggott College is a Sixth Form College specialising in 16-19 education, located on a busy but pleasant site in in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. The College is just ten minutes or so from the M180, which is fed directly from the M18 and then the M1 – you’d be able to commute here quite easily from most of the towns and conurbations in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, including Pontefract, Doncaster, Sheffield, Grimsby, Lincoln, York and Hull.


The college was confirmed as ‘Good’ in May 2018 and the Department for Education has affirmed we are also in solidly Satisfactory financial health.


The College has more than 1,600 learners, and offers them any course, in any combination, from a choice of more than fifty courses at Level 3 (A level and equivalent). We have a growing and popular enrichment programme packed with exciting opportunities, often run by the students, and we provide an A*spire programme with specialist support to stretch and challenge the gifted and talented. It is hoped that the successful candidate will take up the appointment as soon as possible, probably at September 2021, however this is fully negotiable - a New Year start is feasible, if you should require it.

Our Location

The College is located on a spacious site on West Common Lane, in Old Brumby, Scunthorpe , on the fringe of beautiful North Lincolnshire countryside, but still an easy commute from the towns and cities of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and beyond via close motorway links and connections to the M1.


The College is near to the culture and bustle of town and city life, but lies close to some of the North's finest countryside.
